Does that mean that rank tracking is dead? Well, not exactly.

a) Measure the changes in your keyword performance

1. Track your website rankings in real-time
Imagine a world without any rank tracker tool. To track your keyword rankings, you need to list out all your keywords in an Excel spreadsheet and type in each keyword on Google. Now, repeat the whole process for the other hundreds or thousands of keywords that you have in your list.
It’s tedious and time-consuming.
That’s why you need to use a rank tracker tool to automate the monitoring process for you. To start tracking, all you need to do is enter your domain name and create a tracking profile.

- Manually adding your keywords that you’re targeting for your content
- Find the keywords that your pages are ranked for in Rank Intelligence (including the ones that you don’t know) and click the “Track” button to add them to Rank Tracking.

2. Accurate Insights and reporting
If you are doing SEO for your clients, then you need to prove the campaign’s success by reporting to your clients. After all, how do you demonstrate the impact of your work on the management and higher-ups?
One way you want to report on SEO is to show how many keywords have started to rank since your last report, what are their last positions and the performance change over time.
You can get all this information from the dashboard as shown in the screenshot below.
Let’s start from the top left. The ranking distribution will show you how many and where the keywords are being ranked on the SERP. Are they being ranked on the top of the first page (#1-3), the bottom of the first page (#4-10) or in the middle-of-nowhere on Google (#11-100)?
On the right side, you’ll be able to see some graphs indicating the average positions for all the keywords and how many of them are being ranked on Position Zero or Extra Features.
To make it clear for you, Position Zero (or commonly known as Featured Snippet) is the box of information that you find on top of the SERP.
Extra Features are the special elements that Google has been introducing to the SERP such as People Also Ask, images, YouTube videos and more. Here is the list of Extra Features that Google has been displaying on the SERP and the icons we are going to show you on Rank Tracking.
The Overall Ranking Movement section will show you the overall performance change of your keywords over time. You can see how many keywords rankings are moving up (positive), moving down (negative) or not moving at all (neutral) since your last log-in.
Scroll down a little and you will be able to see a list of every keyword that you have added to track in Rank Tracking.
We all know keywords take time, and their trend information will give us an overview of the performance of the keywords. With this information, you will be able to find out which keywords are moving up or down on the SERP.
3. Monitor on page-level to reduce ranking fluctuations
While the dashboard does an excellent job in giving you a high-level overview of your rankings, it’s time to dive deeper for more detailed ranking information.
As content is changed and updated, pages are moved and deleted, and as competitors and markets shift, your rankings can shift with them.
Without keeping a close eye on your content, topics, and keywords, you can find yourself in a position where your pages are competing for relevancy and your rankings fragment as a result.
4. Go deeper into keyword level to reduce keyword cannibalization
If you’ve been running your website for quite some time, there is a chance that your website unintentionally targets the same keyword for multiple pages.
When that happens, Google will have to weigh the pages against each and chooses which ones it thinks to be more relevant. That’s the basis of keyword cannibalization.
But, don’t you worry about that! You can now identify keyword cannibalization by looking at the keyword level in Rank Tracking.
Run down the list of keywords and look for any duplicate entries. You can also sort the keywords by clicking on the “Pages Tracking” tab.
Let’s take a look at the “how to improve page authority” keyword here as an example. Since there are 2 pages that have the same target keywords, I can click the arrow button to find out the pages that are overlapping.
One of the pages is not related to the targeted keyword and being ranked on the SERP.
It might rank higher now on the SERP compared to the other one. However, when users are searching for ways to improve their page authority and come across the blog, the bounce rate will increase and thus, affecting the conversions in the end.
5. Grouping your keywords with tags
Another feature that you should consider using when tracking your rankings is the tags.
Rank Tracking allows you to divide relevant keywords into several groups, making it easier for you to track them. You can categorize them according to quality, content topic and importance.
By prioritizing different keyword groups, you make it easier to analyze and evaluate the information from your monitoring processes. The different keyword categories will also let you know what keywords to keep and what not for your next SEO strategies.
